Need Custom Valve Body Machining? What to Prepare Before Sending an RFQ
When sourcing custom-machined valve bodies, sharing complete technical details is the best way to get an accurate quote.
For valve makers and procurement teams, valve body machining is far more than cutting metal to specified dimensions. Material choice, casting quality, machining tolerances, sealing surfaces and inspection rules all shape production costs and lead times.
At Yining Machinery, we regularly produce custom valve bodies built directly from customer drawings. Drawing on our shop-floor experience, here is a checklist of key information you should sort out before requesting a quotation.
π 1. Submit Full Engineering Drawings
Clear drawings form the foundation of any valve body machining job. Ideally, supply both 2D drawings and a 3D model. We accept PDF, STEP, IGES and DWG files.
Drawings should clearly mark out:
- Overall dimensions and machining allowances
- Critical tolerance requirements
- Flange sizes and bolt hole positions
- Internal flow paths and sealing surfaces
- Thread standards and connection details
- Surface roughness targets
For complex valve bodies, a 3D model lets our engineers check geometry, assess tool access and flag potential manufacturing challenges early. We can still proceed with only 2D drawings, but extra technical confirmation will be needed before we finalize pricing.
π§ͺ 2. Confirm Exact Material Grade
Material selection has a direct impact on cost and process planning. Different service conditions call for different mechanical strength, corrosion resistance and temperature resistance.
Common grades for valve bodies:
Carbon Steel: ASTM A216 WCB, ASTM A216 WCC, ASTM A105, ASTM A350 LF2
Stainless Steel: ASTM A351 CF8, ASTM A351 CF8M, ASTM A351 CF3M, ASTM A182 F304/F304L, ASTM A182 F316/F316L
Duplex Steel: 2205, 2507, ASTM A995 CD3MWCuN
Special Alloys: Hastelloy C-276, Inconel 625, Monel
For stainless or special alloy parts, state the full material standard and grade. If dual-certification or NACE compliance is required, specify this upfront. Do not leave material requirements open to interpretation, especially for harsh-service applications.
π― 3. Identify Critical Machining Tolerances
Not every surface on a valve body needs tight precision. A small set of features directly impacts assembly, sealing performance and interchangeability:
- Sealing surfaces: finish and dimensional accuracy govern sealing performance
- Stem bore alignment: precise positioning ensures smooth valve operation
- Flange connections: face dimensions, bolt patterns and facing follow relevant industry standards
- Internal cavity: enough clearance for balls, discs, seats and other internals
For custom orders, mark critical dimensions directly on drawings. Avoid applying overly tight tolerances across all features β this helps us select suitable machining methods and keep costs reasonable.
βοΈ 4. Clarify Scope: Casting, Forging and Machining
Let us know whether you need a fully finished valve body, or only machining work on your existing raw casting/forging. Three typical arrangements:
- Option A: Full manufacturing We supply the raw casting or forging, complete machining, carry out inspections and deliver finished valve bodies.
- Option B: Machining only You provide the raw casting or forging, and we perform all required machining operations.
- Option C: Prototype run Small batch samples for dimensional check, assembly fit test and performance validation before mass production.
For new casting developments, pattern tooling cost and casting lead time are quoted separately. If you already have patterns or available blanks, share this information to cut extra development expense.
π 5. Lay Out Inspection and Certification Requirements
Quality documentation is essential for industrial valve parts, especially for export customers. Common deliverables include:
- EN 10204 3.1 Material Test Certificates
- PMI positive material identification
- Dimensional inspection reports
- Hardness test
- Chemical analysis
- Mechanical property test
- NDT non-destructive testing
- Third-party witness inspection
For sour service, clearly state compliance with NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 or NACE MR0103/ISO 17945. All certificates, heat treatment records and test reports must be traceable to the material heat number.
Yining Machinery holds ISO 9001 and CE certification. We can supply material paperwork and arrange third-party testing as required by the project.
π 6. Share Estimated Order Volume
Order size heavily affects pricing. Unit cost for one-off prototypes is very different from mass production. Typical volume brackets for reference: 1β5 pcs: prototype validation 10β50 pcs: small batch 100β500 pcs: regular production 1,000 pcs and above: long-term supply
Batch quantity affects CNC programming, tool setup, raw material purchasing and inspection planning. If you have an annual consumption forecast, sharing it helps us work out a more cost-effective production plan.
π‘οΈ 7. Specify Surface Treatment and Special Terms
Extra surface finishing may be needed depending on material and working environment: Sandblasting, polishing, electroless nickel plating, hard chrome plating, black oxide, protective coating.
Also note special rules for marking, packaging, cleanliness and corrosion protection. Stainless steel bodies often require defined surface finish and full material traceability. Carbon steel parts usually need anti-rust protection during storage and transit. Setting these requirements clearly prevents unexpected charges or delivery delays.
π 8. What to Include in Your RFQ
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Part Name | Valve Body |
| Drawings | PDF, STEP, IGES, DWG |
| Material Grade | WCB, CF8M, CF3M, 316L etc. |
| Scope of Work | Casting + Machining / Forging + Machining / Machining Only |
| Quantity | Prototype or production quantity |
| Dimensional Tolerance | As per drawing |
| Surface Finish | Required Ra value |
| Quality Docs | EN 10204 3.1, PMI, inspection reports |
| Special Requirements | NACE, NDT, third-party inspection |
